…news reports say “code blue” for the homeless.  that means…get the f*ck inside…it’s freezing out and you can die.  shelters are full…literally turning people away.  how is that possible?

  1. Very sad, it was all I could do today to run from the car to the store without feeling like I was freezing. I can not imagine having to sleep in such conditions. The 2nd photo, is that the same man from Friday’s post? The bag, shoes and blanket look the same.

  2. same guy. i’ve been seeing him a lot lately and it’s so hard not to be saddened & intrigued by the deeper story.

sara and i were chatting this evening. i may be loading up with hand/feet warmers to pass out during my travels.

    it is unbelievably cold.

  3. Only America can solve this problem, the richest nation on earth. This is America’s disgrace, it is true there are people on the streets in Britain but they are there by choice, there is provision made. In America if you fall you fall there is little or nothing by way of a safety net.

  4. Hand/foot warmers…EXCELLENT idea.

I hear the same thing every year about shelters being full. You would think that they could put extra people in the hallways? Or find SOME-THING! They better start making some arrangements, because they’re going to be finding that more and more people are out there. They will need to increase their capacity very quickly I think.

  5. susanne…here’s hoping that some additional exposure (via this blog) will create the awareness that is necessary to get these people help. minimally, i’m hopeful it will motivate citizens to donate, volunteer or offer up ideas to address the issue of homelessness.

sheila…i honestly don’t how space could ever be an issue. these people aren’t looking for a cot. they just need shelter from the bitter cold. there is enough warehouse space in baltimore to provide some sort of make-shift solution in times like this. it’s pretty pathetic if you ask me and is entirely unacceptable.

this comes down to humanitarian aid. there’s no money in it for the policy makers…so it falls to the bottom of the priority list.
